Bathroom Remodeling for the Elderly
When people begin to age they have more difficulty in doing the things they have always done. They also become more prone to accidents such as falls and slips. A fall in the lavatory can cause the person to break a hip, or to strike their head and be rendered unconscious. These are very dangerous occurrences. More so if the person is alone at the time of the fall and no one is aware of the accident. So when you start to age you should consider doing bathroom remodeling to accommodate the needs of the elderly.

The biggest concern for the safety of the elderly in a lavatory is the risk of falling. You want to make certain the floor is not too slippery when wet or too slippery when dry for that matter. You can replace floor tile with textured ceramic tiles that will help the soles of the slippers often worn inside to get a firm grip.
You need to think about placing bars in the shower for the person to grip when they are turning, or when they are stepping in and out. These bars can prevent a fall from occurring. You also need to apply the decorative products designed to be placed on the surface of a tub or a shower so that they render the surface less slippery.
You also need to consider adding a bar next to the toilet to assist the elderly person in standing back up. The strain of standing can also cause the elderly to lose balance and fall. Another good thing to do for the elderly is to install a toilet that has a taller than normal base. This will make the act of standing easier and reduce falls.
Make certain that all rugs in this room have skid free backings. A rug can be very dangerous and should be left out of the room altogether, but if you must have a rug in the room make sure it does not slip on the floor. The elderly do not lift their feet as high when they walk, so their feet often hang on things such as area rugs.
